America's Oldest Car Collection

Larz Anderson
Auto Museum

Nestled within the 64-acre Larz Anderson Park in Brookline, Massachusetts, the Larz Anderson Auto Museum is home to America's oldest car collection. Housed in a magnificent 1888 Carriage House — a National Historic Landmark — the museum traces the evolution of the automobile from its earliest days to the modern era.

The collection began when Ambassador Larz Anderson and his wife Isabel purchased their first car in 1899 — a Winton 4-hp Runabout. Over the years, their fleet grew to 32 motorcars spanning four decades of automotive history. After Isabel's passing in 1948, the collection was entrusted to what would become the Veteran Motor Car Club of America, ensuring this irreplaceable slice of history would be preserved for generations to come.

Today the museum hosts rotating exhibits, special events, and car shows — and on May 23rd, 2026, it will host something truly special: a convoy of cars arriving for The Rhode Rally.
